An unusually high pulse rate threatens to sideline the 24-year-old Croatian in the two-discipline event that she has virtually owned since winning the Winter Games title in 2002. The speedy pulse re-kindled fears about a previous thyroid ailment that sidelined her two seasons ago. After bowing out of Wednesday's downhill, Kostelic plans to race on Friday if doctors give her the green light. If she races she usually wins, having lost the event just once since winning the Olympic title in Salt Lake City. A three-times gold medallist in Salt Lake, Kostelic has her sights set on defending her giant slalom and slalom titles next week, and racing in the super-G on Sunday. If Kostelic is unable to race -- she also had a high fever on Thursday -- or falters on the piste, the gold will likely go to Sweden's Anja Paerson, who won the overall World Cup last season. Other gold medal competitions on Friday comprise the men's 15 km classical cross country race, the women's snowboard cross, and the men's skeleton. Norwegian Frode Estil's chief challengers in the 15km cross country race will be overall World Cup leader Thomas Angerer of Germany and Olympic champion and classical specialist Andrus Veerpalu of Estonia. In the snowboard cross at Bardonecchia, favourite Lindsey Jacobellis shoots for the U.S.'s fourth snowboarding gold of the Games. Canada's Jeff Pain is the favourite to win men' skeleton gold at the Cesana track. His most dangerous rival should be Switzerland's Gregor Staehli, who won bronze in Salt Lake City and finished second to the Canadian in this season's World Cup.

Alpine skiing: Weather delays women's combined Feb 17 2006 (Updates with further delay, previous SESTRIERE)
SAN SICARIO, Italy, Feb 17 (Reuters) - The women's Alpine skiing combined downhill at the Turin Winter Olympics was postponed to 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) on Friday due to bad weather.
Organisers said the downill will begin one hour later than scheduled and from the super-G start, making the course almost 500 metres shorter.
The two slalom legs of the combined are due to take place in Sestriere later on Friday.
At least 5 centimetres (2 inches) of snow fell on the downhill venue of San Sicario overnight and driving snow continued throughout the morning adding to poor visibility. An improvement in conditions is likely to be needed if the race is to take place at the new time.
Thursday's training run on the downhill course was cancelled because of the first snowfalls of the Games and low visibility.

Croatian Kostelic sensational again By Andy Gardiner, USA TODAY SAN SICARIO — Croatia's Janica Kostelic defended her Olympic gold medal and became the most successful female skier in Olympic history Saturday by winning gold in the women's combined with a clutch downhill race that was fast enough to fend off Marlies Schild of Austria and Anja Paerson of Sweden. ( By Luca Bruno, AP
The gold was Kostelic's fourth, lifting her out of a deadlock with Katja Seizinger of Germany, Verni Schneider of Switzergland and Deborah Compagnoni of Italy. Kostelic is now tied with Seizinger and Schneider for the overall medal lead with five.
"Records are to be beaten," Kostelic said. "Someone else will come with five or six. But for now it is good."
The combined was originally scheduled as a one-day event Friday, beginning with the downhill. But high winds pushed that race to Saturday and then heavy snow forced a 90-minute postponement and the lowering of the start 125 yards to the beginning of the super-G course.
That, and nine inches of new snow that slowed the course, played in Kostelic's favor and against Paerson, who won bronze in the downhill and could have used her speed on a longer course to offset the 0.38-second edge Kostelic held after the slalom.
"This feels like winning and coming last," a disappointed Paerson said of her bronze. "I wanted to come here to be an Olympic champion and today I think I lost one of the opportunities."
Kostelic, who dropped out of the downhill because of an elevated blood pressure, also recognized the benefit of the lowered starting point.
"It was a good thing for me the downhill was from the super-G start because halfway down I had no power any more," Kostelic said. "My skis were very fast and I just followed my skis."
Kostelic began Saturday in second position after Friday's two slalom runs, 0.46 seconds behind the leader Schild. Paerson was the first of the three to ski and took the lead with a downhill run of one minute, 29.57 seconds and a combined time of 2.51:63.
Kostelic put down a flawless run of 1:29.40 for a total of 2:51.08. Schild, the last racer with a chance for the top, snuck past Paerson but could not catch Kostelic, ending in 2:51.58.
"I expected a bronze medal, maybe," Schild said. "When I saw I was second I was very surprised, very happy."
Kostelic won three gold medals and a silver in the 2002 Winter Games to claim the throne of women's premier all-around skier. But injuries (four knee operations in 2003, one in 2005) and illness (she had her thyroid removed in 2004) derailed the 24-year old for almost three seasons.
Kostelic returned in a huge way in last year's World Championships, winning the downhill, slalom and combined. But she had battled ill health in these Olympics and complained of feeling terribly after the two slalom runs. She considered not racing Saturday.
"But after the slalom I had to race the downhill," she said. "I always ski good when I'm sick. It was a challenge for me to beat my sickness."
Kostelic said she was "99% certain" she will not race in Sunday's super-G, where she won silver in 2002, in order to conserve strength for the giant slalom and slalom. That will open the door for Paerson, who has won four medals in four events in the last two Olympics, but none of them gold.
