Middlesbrough are on the trail of Croatia star Niko Kranjcar as manager Steve McClaren draws up his New Year spending plans.
Kranjcar, a 20-year-old midfielder, plays for Dinamo Zagreb, whose officials are understood to have held talks with Boro.
Barcelona and Juventus have also been linked with Kranjcar, who has won four full international caps.
A fee of around £2.5m is being mooted for the talented youngster, who has apparently jumped to the top of manager McClaren's wish-list following the news that Spain international Gaizka Mendieta will miss the rest of the season through injury.
