TE DEUM & THE BAR PRODUCTION CO. PRESENT
'CARGO'
Ben Richards’ play CARGO, is a much needed response to the welter of controversy that surrounds asylum seeking in Britain. A Fringe First Award nominee in 2002, CARGO is a gripping story about the underground industry in human trafficking in Europe, as well as ‘an intelligent and powerfully performed exploration of the Immigration Issue’ (The List).
Set in the back of a juggernaut, CARGO follows the terrifying journey of four immigrants desperately attempting to enter Britain. Nominated for Amnesty International’s prestigious Freedom of Expression Award, as a piece that challenges prejudice and contributes to the public’s understanding of human rights, CARGO highlights the realities of UK Immigration Law – those that break it, and those that are broken by it.
‘Ben Richards’ fiery new play… Michael Longhurst’s sensitive direction’ Scotsman ****
‘…tense, claustrophobic, excellently acted…’ Metro ****
After receiving much critical acclaim and public interest at its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival, The Oval House Theatre, renowned for its socially diverse programming and support for talented emerging theatre companies, is excited to receive CARGO for its London Premiere this season. Te Deum and The BAR Production Company have a consistent record of producing quality theatre and are delighted to be collaborating on this project: ‘Theatre as it ought to be: S. and experimental, riveting performances from accomplished actors’ The Guardian.
By presenting CARGO in London, we hope to redress the unhealthy media-induced hysteria surrounding the issue of asylum seekers and make space for intelligent, informed debate on the subject. With 74% of Britain’s subsistence-receiving asylum seekers based in London, CARGO is a play that we feel must be presented here. Please help us to do this.
Attached is an outline of possible ways to support this project and description of the benefits available to your company for doing so. We very much hope that you feel this is a worthwhile project that you are able to contribute towards in some way.
