Handel's ‘musical drama’, first performed in 1745, tells the story of the last days of Hercules. The hero returns home with the captured princess Iöle, incurring the jealousy of his wife Dejanira. Attempting to regain his love, Dejanira gives her husband a cloak, unaware that it possesses a terrible secret. The tragic consequences are lightened by the growing love between Iöle and Hercules' son Hyllus, bringing the hope of a new generation. Remarkable both for its powerful choruses and for its vivid musical portraits of the solo roles, Hercules is one of Handel's greatest works.
