Hiya Susie If u r going 2 Hvar, don't worry u'll have a fab time ! The place is beautiful, like a whole island and there are plenty of small bars and restorants to choise, prices are also good. As Hvar is an very old bay 400yrs.b.c. there are many historical places to see but then again night life is also good. Ferry The best is to take ferry from Split have a gr8 time

Dear Susie,
If you are staying right in Cavtat, it isn't necessary to hire a car, but there are so many places to see that I would recommend renting one at least for a couple of days. You can rent at the airport. You'll get a better rate if you book ahead on the net.
Recommendations: Buy the small guidebook sold in any of the shops along the waterfront, "Cavtat/Konavle". It has great information about the town itself as well as the beautiful Konavle region nearby. If you are there on a Sunday, it is fun to watch the folkdancers perform Sunday morning in the nearby town of Cilipi.
The best restaurant in Cavtat is Restaurant Kolona, across from the bus stop behind the main street. The view is not as nice as other restaurants, but the food is the best and the owner is delightful. Try the seafood fettucine.
The cafe with the best view is the Buena Vista, up the hill from Our Lady of the Snows church. Follow the signs for the Mausoleum. As you climb up the stairs, the cafe is on your right, marked only by a very small sign. The view of the entire town is spectacular.
The town itself is so charming that you may not want to leave but you will, of course, want to go to Dubrovnik. Ferries to Dubrovnik are all along the waterfront. Between Cavtat and Dubrovnik, you will find that one week is not nearly enough time.
I recommend you buy the Visible Cities guide to Dubrovnik. It has wonderful city walks and contains information not found in other guidebooks.
