Excellent article.
Just wait for Anja & the primitives to start attacking the author, article, author's family etc...
Hopefully we are not going to have a repetition of last years primitive outbursts of false patriotism when some of us had to write to Guardian and apologise for rubbish from our brainless fellow countryfolk.

Sorry , but some people are never going to forget the embarasment and damage Anja & other of her stature kept causing. As a result we are all being regarded as a bunch of useless Balkan peasants, better left alone. Did you see the comments about the Visit Croatia website, by the way?

Don't be fooled by this.
This guy has been invited to Croatia by a PR agency and effectively promised to sex up Croatia as destination.
This , he did.
No one disputes the beauty of Dalmatian coastline and the islands, but Croatia has along way to go beore the Brits are back,
Here the reasons:
- lack of 3 star hotels which would appeal to cheaper end of the market
- lack of luxurious 5 star hotels which would appeal to expensive end of the market
- lack of entertainment for younger people
- Low availability of last minuted deals and cheap flights
- PERCEPTION
This is the biggest issue. To most Brits Croatia is still a far away dangerous East European country where people are butchering each other. To say that Dubrovnik is a Mediterranean city would make people laugh. It just does not sound like it, as they say.
You cannot educate the people over night. Most people here cannot spell Croatia, let alone work out where it is on the map.
It is a lost cause I am afraid.

Ive been to Croatia in June this year. Ive visited Plitvice and realy had a great time. service was good (Hotel Plitvice) everybody spoke at least 3 languages, hotel was clean, food exelent, price was even good, the lakes were amazing, weather beautiful BUT We could not get return bus ticket to Zagreb. only one way.We were told there was frequent bus stop just outside the park and buses towards Zagreb would departure at least twice an hour. We waited for 4 hours for bus to stop !!!!! Like in the last century, you have to stop bus by waveing and hoping that bus driver will fell sorry enough and stop The roads are realy bad ! The only encouraging thing is that there are many road works around Croatia and hopefuly it will improve soon, but I must say after UK roads and motorways it was a big shock. Not to mention border guard like its forbiden by their contract to be pleasent and mabe, just mabe, smile a tiny tiny bit. Most of our borders have at least 5-10 enterances/exits, but no, we open only one gate so guests who decide to come to Croatia and spend their money can get stressed and dissapointed even before entering the country. Whats the point ? ? ? ?

Sanja, I am surprised with your bus experiance at Plitvice Lakes. I had no problem in getting a bus to ZAG from there.
Re: Borders, you are right!

Croatia is a beautiful country but has many problems to overcome. Firstly border guards that act as communist despots do not create a good impression, people want to be welcomed, not scared wittless!!! Secondly people like Anja and setting Croatia back into the days of Facism with her stupid comments. I have read your message board for a number of months and don't relate to a word she says. Thirdly Croatia needs more airline links to the UK, this way more people can experience the beauty of your country!
Hvala

While I accept your comments about border guards- some other people were saying exactly the same- I must mention here the people at Pula airport who could not have been better or nicer both last summer and this year. Smiles, politeness, wink and a wave to the children - just great. Yes, tourists did feel welcomed, and they mentioned it to the others as well. As far as other points you raised - more flights, yes please. Also, there is a difference between Croatians who live here for 10, 20 years or more and the temporary visitors and newcomers, who are still ignorant about the British way of life, and arrogant enough to offer "poor Brits" their advice on how to suck eggs and other important matters. See comments Angelo received for running the Website, and you will have to agree.

Have to argue with Marko's ideas. Short and to the point: 1.- Croatia does not need or want mass tourism so no more (or just a few more) 3 star hotels 2.- There are more 5 star hotles already; with more still being either built or planned. As this costs money, it might take some time 3.- There might be a need for more entertainment, but as that usually goes hand in hand with drunks and drugs and lagerlouts - thanks, but we do not really need them 4.- After first three points, this one is not relevant any more anyway. Better quality accommodation etc is very seldom offered for nothing, as it can be sold at normal prices to normal people
