METZ, France (AP) --
Arnaud Clement of France and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia won singles matches Friday, leaving the Davis Cup series tied 1-1.
France, a nine-time Davis Cup winner, took the early lead in the World Group match when Clement breezed past Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 on the clay courts. Ljubicic, Croatia's No. 1 player, then downed Thierry Ascione 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.
Nicolas Escude and Mickael Llodra play Ancic and Ljubicic in Saturday's doubles. On Sunday, Clement faces Ljubicic and Ascione meets Ancic.
Clement saved four break points in the first set before taking Ancic's serve at 4-4 with a backhanded passing shot. Ascione, making his first appearance for France in the competition, had no answer to Ljubicic's powerful game.

France reached the Davis Cup quarter-finals after Arnaud Clement secured a 6-2 3-6 7-6 6-4 win over Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic in the first reverse singles on Monday.
Nicolas Escude wrapped up the 4-1 win when he outplayed Ivo Karlovic 7-6 6-2 in the final dead rubber.
