Teenager Sprem sails into semis January 16, 2004 - 12:01AM
(Sydney Morning Herald)
Croatian teenager Karolina Sprem yesterday knocked fifth seed Emilie Loit out of the Canberra Women's Classic to set up a semi-final clash with top seed Paola Suarez.
Sprem, ranked 58th in the world, easily outplayed world No.43 Loit 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the final four.
Second seed Silvia Farina Elia from Italy and Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko will play in today's other semi-final.
Suarez, who beat Spaniard Arantxa Parra 6-2, 6-2 in her quarter-final, predicted today's clash against the 19-year-old would be difficult.
"She is a very good young player," she said of Sprem, who shot up the world rankings from No.273 at the start of last year.
"She is on the way up and I think she has the potential to maybe go top 20.
"It will be a tough match, she hits the ball very hard and she is very fast, she is a very good young player."
Farina Elia survived a tough three-set match against eighth seed Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain, while Vakulenko continued her dream run through the tournament when she upset Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-4.
