Today's Slobodna Dalmacija says that CRO ambassador in London Josko Paro only got his University degree just shortly before being appointed to this post. The meaning is that he is not qualified.
THIS IS STUPID! Who cares about his degrees, if he is doing a good job!
What the others think?

Croatia is obsessed by qualifications. Last year, I saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a post of sales assistant, which required the applicants to have a LAW degree!! How stupid is that. It makes mockery of the education system and devalues degrees. For some occupations it is only right and proper to have a degree (doctors for example). You should not have started me off. This is one of my pet hates.

The same is true of some businesses in the UK. I used to work for a company that wouldn't promote people past a certain grade unless they had a degree. There was a situation where a vacancy arose for a managers job, and the best candidate was a guy who had worked there 5 years in a supervisor role plus doing relief for the department when they were managerless. But because he didn't have a degree they wouldn't give him the job. To make things even more farcical, it didn't matter what degree it was you had, even if completely irrelevant, just as long as you had one.

Its a bit like the "quite man" leader of the conservatives. Couple of months ago he was in the news for not actually having a degree of an Italian College, he added to his CV.

Isn't thread drift wonderful? My problem with qualifications was being asked to produce the certificates years after I'd last seen them. For my permanent residence they wanted certificates. In the UK no one ever asks to see them once more than around 5 years has passed, so you don't guard them with your life. They are more interested in your experience. When I tried to get duplicates, I was told that their records didn't go back that far! Bok

In my years as a publisher of technical magazines, I probably employed 100+ people. I never asked to see a diploma or certificate proving qualifications. If someone could not do a job, what is the point of him or her having the best possible grades?
