Serb leader persists in slamming Croatian government's human rights record

Zagreb, 2 September: The president of the Serb National Party, Milan Djukic, said on Tuesday (2 September) nobody had refuted with valid arguments his comparison of the incumbent Croatian government's policy towards Serbs to that of the 1941-45 Independent State of Croatia (NDH).
Backing his claim, Djukic showed reporters the copy of a collection of NDH laws and orders and said the current legal regulation of Serbs' human rights and freedoms in Croatia was "meaner" than at the time of the NDH.
Djukic said Prime Minister Ivica Racan should have replied with solutions to his 10 arguments on the violations of Serbs' human rights in Croatia - the right to reconstruction, the restitution of property, pensions, shares, severance pays and a job.
As for reactions from representatives of non-governmental organizations, Djukic said they were indulging in idle talk, notably Serb National Council president Milorad Pupovac and Croatian Helsinki Committee on Human Rights president Zarko Puhovski.
Commenting on Pupovac's political statements, Djukic said this was a "man who wants to extend his mandate as the (government residence) Banski Dvori poodle and thus continue to love state money on behalf of the Serb people".
As for Puhovski, Djukic said he was allergic to those who are principled, consistent, and fight for human rights with valid arguments. Puhovski has forgotten his "political description of (military operation) Storm as classic ethnic cleansing. It's difficult to be a sycophant and a politician," he said.
Referring to the university professors who had reacted to his statements, Djukic said it showed that "professors know everything but understand nothing".
