GRAZ, Austria, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Davis Cup holders Croatia made the perfect start to their title defence by taking a 2-0 lead over Austria on the opening day of their World Group first round tie on Friday.
World number five Ivan Ljubicic, in the unusual role of being player and captain, brushed aside Stefan Koubek 6-2 6-2 6-4 after Mario Ancic had mastered Juergen Melzer in a five-set marathon on a slow clay surface.
Ljubicic dominated Koubek, who he defeated in Davis Cup play in 2001, and left the 300 Croatian fans cheering.
"Currently my tennis is nearly perfect and, contrary to the Austrians' opinion, this is my favourite surface. If I play like this only very few players in the world can beat me," he said.
"It was a bit of a strange day, because it was my first time as a playing coach on the bench, but the longer it went on, the better I could cope with the situation."
Austria captain Thomas Muster was left bitterly disappointed.
"I expected it to be 1-1... since Juergen (Melzer) could have won his game. I was of course not content with Stefan's (Koubek) performance," he said.
"He lacked a true gameplan and although Ljubicic was great, Stefan could have challenged him much more."
Croatia's number two Ancic, who won the decisive rubber against Slovakia in December to clinch Croatia their first Davis Cup crown, toiled for nearly five hours to subdue Melzer 6-7 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-3.
Ancic, who had never won a Davis Cup match on clay, was clearly frustrated in the first two sets but found his rhythm to level the match with a single break in the next two.
Ancic broke Melzer early in the final set and held on to his advantage as the Austrian number one failed to take his break points.

Svoj bijes zbog poraza tenisaèa austrijski je tisak iskalio na mladoj Vukovarki. Zasmetalo im je Mirnino navijanje za Hrvatsku. Austrijski sponzori joj èak prijete otkazivanjem suradnje.
