Just returned from Croatia after meeting with some migrants and members of organisations supporting them with their mental health issues. All the Croats we met were excellent, welcoming and supportive. We were shown around parts of the area ravaged by 1991 war and were greatly and very pleasantly surprised at the improvements and rebuilding achieved, particularly in the small town of Vukovar. There are hundreds of towns in UK similar size without any damage (unless you count council planning daft decisions) done to them for the last 100 years and not looking one quarter as good as Vukovar. Traffic free town centre with lovely cafes, nicely maintained walking areas along Danube and Vuka rivers, beautifully planted and maintained green areas, cycling tracks, open air exercise facilities, many fun activities and performances organised various groups, volunteers and local authority. So, why is such a forward looking, progressive town still decimating it's woods and forests in this day and age, to increase cemetery? Absolutely horrified to find that acres and acres of woods with hundreds of trees are cleared to provide burial sites but reduce environmental benefits to land and people? Come on, Vukovar, you are better than this, wake up to what is happening to the environment, build a modern way of showing respect to your dead and to your environment.
