Balkan Film Festival - Ipswich 2nd to 5th July 2004
Ipswich will host the first regional Balkan Film Festival at Ipswich Film Theatre, Corn Exchange.
Organized by the Balkan Cultural Centre in partnership with Ipswich Film Theatre supported by ‘Ip-art’ and funded by Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Constabulary the festival will present a selection of some of the best films in recent years coming from South Eastern Europe:
Albania - ‘Slogans’ Dir. Gjergj Xhuvani and ‘The Kennel’ Dir. Bujar Alimani (Short film) ,
Bosnia & Herzegovina - ‘No Man’s Land’ Dir. Danis Tanovic,
Croatia - ‘Marshal Tito’s Spirit’ Dir Vinko Bresan,
Greece - ‘Ulysses’ Gaze’ Dir. Theo Angelopoulos,
Kosova - ‘Kosova 9/11’ Dir Burbuqe Berisha (short film),
Macedonia - ‘Before the Rain’ Dir Milcho Manchevski,
Romania - ‘Occident’ Dir Cristian Mungiu,
Serbia & Montenegro - ‘Underground’ Dir. Emir Kosturica

The films selected for the festival have won high and important prizes internationally and now truly belong to European Cultural values.
In organising this film festival the Balkan Cultural Centre have tried to both bridge the gap which exists between local Balkan Ethnic communities and their respective cultures and also to give the local community a chance to understand more about the region and its recent past.
At the same time the event as a whole will promote understanding and a positive atmosphere among Balkan Communities in East Anglia.
This is a unique opportunity for all who would love to learn more about the Balkans, its cinema industry, its people, its recent history, its music, languages, authentic sense of humour and it’s spectacular landscapes.
All films will have English subtitles and the festival will be non competitive.
The festival launches on Friday 2nd July with Kosturica’s visionary masterpiece “Underground” at 6:10PM
